Would you like to eat strawberries, find new friends and what is more to earn much? Then gathering reap in Finland is an ideal variant to spend your summer!
Gathering strawberries is the most popular summer activity in Suomi. The season begins at the end of June-beginning of July (depending on the weather) and finishes in late July. The town where there are a lot of strawberry fields is Suonenjoki which is not far from the town Kuopio: there are 650 hectares of ripe aromatic strawberry! Many people come here to earn money. You won’t have to think about food and staying: a farmer who hired you will take care about it. The cost of food and staying (7-10 Euros a day) is taken from your salary. Now the main thing. The money you earn depends on the amount of gathered strawberry, and also on the reap and the season. Imagine, that there are not so many berries and they are slower to gather, but for this you will get paid more. You can earn 800-1400 Euros a month.
The day on a strawberry farm begins very early: you wake up at dawn and at 6 am you come out on a field. The shift ends at 3 pm (with a dinner break). Such timetable has its advantages: it’s not so hot in the morning, moreover you have half a day left! And if you have more strength then you can take up other activities: season of gathering raspberry and young peas follows strawberry season. You can work 2-3 months doing it. Besides, from early May to the beginning of strawberry gathering you can be offered to plant berries and vegetables.
According to Finnish law every person has a right to gather forest berries and mushrooms both for themselves and for selling. It means that if you want to do it you can come independently, without working for a farmer. A harvest is taken on wholesales of berries and vegetables-they are in towns and villages.
It’s better to come to forest by car: you will be able to leave highly populated places and go to the places where there are fewer competitors but more berries and mushrooms. Of course you should bear in mind what berries and mushrooms go in this or that area and also you should differ edible mushrooms from poisoned ones. Nobody will give you advice in the forest: the real mushroom picker will keep the best places in secret!
Mushroom and berry gathering, especially during a harvest period is a profitable activity. The prices by which wholesales take berries are daily changing (depending on the season and a quality of berries). Cloudberry is especially valued: wholesalers buy it for 6-7 Euros for a kilo. Cowberry and bilberry can be sold for 1,5-3,5 Euros for a kilo. In central and Eastern Finland bilberry and cowberry are mainly gathered, In Lapland and North-Western Finland-cloudberry. The most popular mushroom is a white mushroom. It is taken clear for 3-7 Euros for kilo.
