Fishing in Pereslavl
Где остановиться (1)
An ancient town Pereslavl Zalesskyi is situated on the shores of a lake Pleshcheevo. The beautiful scenery, ancient monuments of old Russian architecture create a calm atmosphere for creativity, rest and fishing.
The lake doesn’t have strong channels. The predominant depth is 10-15 meters, there are 3 holes 2-5 meters deep. But on the shores the lake is getting shallow. The river Trubezh and many small streams flow into the lake. There are a lot of wandering springs on the bottom of the lake. When the river is frozen, the strongest springs can raise ice and it can lead a careless fisherman to trouble. Most of all there are such springs in the middle of the lake. One can always bear in mind this fact and always try ice with ice axes.
Thanks to springs in the lake the water is always pure, clear and tasty. There are no died fish in Pleshcheevo. And the fish here is famous for its tastes, among which Pereslavl herring (whitefish) is popular. The stock of this kind of “tsar fish” has become poor and its fishing is forbidden here.
There is hardly ever vegetation in the lake. Only reed is grown along the shore of the lake. Mainly the bottom of the lake is hard, sandy, although in some parts of the holes there is a little quantity of silt. But recently the scientists mark the increase of vegetation. So, what can a fisherman catch on a fishing rod in winter in Pleshcheevo? On a floating rod or on a spoon bait one can catch large roach, guster ( local fishermen call it “kozaha”) There are many perches and pikes. Burbot can often be caught. I could seldom catch bream, which was more like small bream, although they can be here very big. Local fishermen assure that Pereslavl bream from the Nero lake is not caught on a fishing rod in winter. In about 60s of a last century a bream from the Nero lake, which is near Rostov Velikiy was put in the Pleshcheevo lake. Rostov bream is different from a local one in a size and color. Pereslavl bream has a bronze tint and Rostov bream is smaller and has a silver with blue tint. In March you can enjoy catching bleak. It is fat, big and bites well. And now about predators. Of course the first place takes a perch. In the Pleshcheevo lake there are two kinds of perches: humpbacked (a hump can even be seen on a little perch)-they are dark, green-brownish color with white bellies full of orange spots and humpless perch-they are light blue, also with white bellies and which are of a big size. There were some cases of 2,5 kg perch catching .1 kg perches and less is no rarity.
As soon as there is ice a perch bites actively and it bites in such a way till the second decade of January. Later, from the middle of March till the end of winter season. During late winter you can catch mainly small perch (rodent) of about 100 grams. The bigger one is rarely met, a search for it is very difficult, as it flows alone 10-15 meters deep higher 1,5 meter from the bottom. Everything changes in spring. It comes nearer to the bottom, its school is very numerous. Sometimes not going far away on a patch of 30-40 square meters it is possible to catch about 50 perches. You can use any tackle, spoon bait, spinner, “on a devil”, all perch ways except balance weight.
In winter it is not so easy to find a school of perches. Most fishermen know that it is possible to meet a perch near a pioneer camp 14-17 meters deep, and on the opposite side of a lake near children’s house “Kuhmar”. It is useless to look for a perch near underwater springs, which I mentioned above. There is no perch here and it seems as if it tries to avoid these places. Perches of 100-200 grams are well caught on a spinner almost for the whole winter. But to see a big perch is quite hard. In time of darkness you can easily catch perches on a spoon bait, putting on a hook a perch eye instead of crank. A tackle “durilka” is very also very good. It is famous among many fishermen. A spinner without a hook is tied on the main fishing line of 0,2mm and a lead with a little spoon bait is tied to it.
Catching a pike on the lake is also very interesting, a pike can reach the size of 8-10 kg and more (but to tell the truth, nobody managed to catch such big fish). There are three kinds of a pike. A riding pike (a silver fish with grey-yellowish fins) is rarely met. There is also a pike with a big head, which can take half part of a pike. One can catch a pike mainly on a fishing tackle (flags) or on a float tube, which are left for a night. “A tube” is an under ice tackle, which is made out of a 5 cm hose and which is put under the ice. It’s not difficult to catch live baits, small roaches and perches are caught everywhere. Tackles and tubes are put 14-18 meters down near the holes. In April a pike comes to the shore, so tackles can be put 4-6 meters deep. The distance from the bottom is different, if you put a live bait to the bottom, then it’s possible to catch an eelpout but only at night.
According to locals there are two kinds of eelpouts-a usual one and an eelpout-“blind” which is of black marble colour. The meat of this fish is almost not edible, however long you would boil it, it will anyway stay tough. Old fishermen say that this eelpout eats only dead fish.
Poachers use harpoons in shallow water during spawning in bitter colds. This happens not only in Pleshcheevo but also in Rybinka. For doing this poachers bring mattresses and quilts. Lying near the holes covered by quilts to make them dark, they wait for hours for eelpouts.
Eelpouts which are about 2 kg and more are mainly caught at night. At daytime they are hardly ever met. Catching at night at the first ice and at the end of January after spawning is the best. It is recommended to catch on white horizontal spinners-“stukalka”. A bite begins from the evening on the depth of 10-14 meters. At this time eelpouts prepare for the spawning, they eat a lot, eating a large number of whitefish, which spawn in December as soon as the ice appears. At these hours eelpouts attack whitefish and eat it, because they know that in two hours it will come to the surface and will be inaccessible for bottom predators. Cutting eelpouts’ stomachs one can see still alive whitefish. In the stomach of one eelpout there were six whitefish, but that wasn’t enough for it and it bit a spoon bait. More often eelpouts bite a spoon bait across, that’s why when hooking a spoon bait comes out of the mouth and the hook pierces in the corner of the mouth or in the down lip. Catching an eelpout at night you should use a cross spoon bait with hooks, put at both ends and in the bottom with the help of mechanical rings. The bite is expected from 17 to 21 o’clock, then from 23 to 6-7 o’clock in the morning. During 21-23 o’clock a bite is stopped. At bright moon night eelpout begins to bite a little later. Long-lasting thaws make a bite worse. The best days for catching this fish are nasty frosty days. When an eelpout is hooked, first it doesn’t move, but when it is close to the hole itself it begins to rush madly.
The best places for night catching of eelpouts in December in the Pereslavl lake are the places with the depth of 10-14 meters in the south-western part of the lake, which is situated to the 1,5-2 km south of a pioneercamp (“Simak”) and also the places with the depth of 10 meters in the eastern part of the lake. Because of the big depth of the Pereslavl lake one should use a fishing rod with a reel of a big diameter. I recommend to increase the reel and fishing rods to be able to turn a reel without taking off gloves.
And now a little bit information about night fishing in the Pleshcheevo lake. The best weather for perch catching is bright frosty days without winds. When nasty days last for a long time, a bite, as a rule, decreases, but roaches and other small fish begin to bite actively. When north-western wind blows, it’s better not to go on the lake- there will not be a bite anyway. The best hours for catching are from 7.30-to 9 and from 11 to 12, which is followed by a bite with breaks. Before one hour sun setting an active bite of roaches 30-50 cm higher from the bottom is possible. The first morning hours define the bite for the whole day, and if there was no bite in the morning, then it is not worth waiting for it later. If you see local fishermen coming to the shore of the lake by 11 o’clock, then you can reel off you fishing rods too.
